With around 200 senior researchers working on energy related issues, Oxford has a depth and breadth of expertise that we believe is second to none.

Oxford is addressing the major technical, social, economic and policy challenges of providing secure, affordable and sustainable energy for all. The Oxford Energy Network brings together researchers from across the University in order to address this energy challenge holistically.

Our expertise includes:

  • energy economics – policy, politics, law and regulation

  • marine energy – design of marine turbines, wave energy convertors, and off-shore platforms for wind turbines and drilling

  • fossil fuels – upstream geological, engineering and ecological issues and downstream chemical issues

  • nuclear – nuclear materials and processes for fission and fusion energy through to the socio-economic impacts of new nuclear energy systems

  • electricity networks – smartening the grid and designing future electricity markets

  • developing countries – robust, low maintenance, low cost energy technologies for use in rural areas

  • storage – new electrode and electrolyte materials and manufacturing technology for batteries for all application domains, real-time management of battery systems, super-capacitors, thermal storage, production and storage of hydrogen, and conversion of carbon-dioxide to hydrocarbons

  • demand and efficiency – technologies to reduce consumption, understanding of energy use and work on policy assessment and innovation

  • bioenergy – improving efficiency and sustainability of the production and transformation of biomass and the use of bioenergy and understanding impacts

  • transport – design of better infrastructure, through fostering moves to low impact transport, improving the efficiency of engines, designing lighter weight materials for cars and aircraft, developing novel electric engines

  • solar – photovoltaic, artificial photosynthesis and solar thermal
