MRC funds innovative research that tells us how the brain controls our behaviour, how the nervous system functions throughout life in health and disease, and how it responds to injury. It also supports the development of tools and techniques that help others carry out research on the nervous system. MRC is particularly interested in multidisciplinary research that will increase our understanding of the brain in health and disease.

Applications Procedure:

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they apply to the correct call/board/type of grant. Applicants must read and understand any guidance and if in doubt, they should contact the relevant programme manager for that call for further information. Incorrect selection will incur significant delay and is very likely to cause deferral to a later meeting – typically a delay of 4 months or more.

For some schemes or calls applicants may need to submit Outline proposals before making full proposals. Usually feedback will be given at the end of the Outline stage. Such feedback is designed to help applicants improve the quality of their subsequent full proposal, if invited, to strengthen its competitiveness. IP Commercialisation obligations:

Research funded by the MRC has led to some of the most significant medical advances of the last century and generated millions of pounds for the UK economy. MRC doesn’t own any intellectual property generated by research it funds unless it is conducted in our institutes and units, instead this belongs to the researchers and universities doing the work. MRC Technology is responsible for managing MRC intellectual property and works to exploit our scientists’ research findings to generate income that then funds further research. Exploitation of academic research to deliver health benefits, economic growth and jobs is the best delivered in the commercial sector. We joint fund projects with industry and government agencies such as the Technology Strategy Board to ensure research originating in academia has the best chance of success. Partnerships between MRC funded scientists and industry are made possible through use of specific industry collaboration agreements.
