A connected community

At the heart of the Oxfordshire innovation ecosystem is the University of Oxford – a global centre of knowledge and research, ranked number one in the world for ten consecutive years, and the anchor institution bringing together people, ideas, investment, and partnerships.

Around it, a powerful and connected system has grown over the last four decades. As the University’s innovation partner for nearly 40 years, we’ve worked with a wide network of collaborators across business, government, and academia – and alongside Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE), the University’s investment partner for science. This innovation ecosystem connects research with partners, investment, and expertise, enabling ideas to move from discovery to impact at scale.

Oxford is the UK’s leading university for spinout creation

with over 350 companies formed since 1987 and strong, sustained growth in company value and investment.

In 2024/25 alone, OUI-supported companies raised £489.8m

with landmark £1bn+ exits in 2025 – including OrganOx and Oxford Ionics – reflecting global confidence in Oxford’s innovation pipeline and its ability to deliver impact at scale.

The University contributes £16.9bn to the UK economy

and supports more than 90,000 jobs, with over a third of that impact felt outside the South East.

Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE)

At the heart of Oxford’s innovation ecosystem is a three-way partnership between the University of Oxford, Oxford University Innovation (OUI) and OSE – the University’s investment partner for science. Together, we help ensure Oxford’s science reaches the world – through multiple pathways, tailored to each idea and opportunity.

As the University’s innovation partner, we work across the full breadth of Oxford’s knowledge and research, supporting the journey from ideas to impact by identifying and protecting intellectual property, supporting company creation and growth, and enabling consultancy and collaboration.

OSE is an independent investment company and venture builder, investing in and co-creating a subset of Oxford science companies – those with the potential to become billion-pound companies delivering global impact.

The national growth opportunity

Oxford also plays a central role in the Oxford–Cambridge Growth Corridor, one of Europe’s most significant innovation regions. Initiatives like Equinox are helping connect research, investment and infrastructure to support innovation-led growth.

This aligns with the UK Government’s growth agenda, which recognises the unique role universities like Oxford play in turning world-leading research into economic impact.

Equinox

Equinox (Equitable Innovation Oxford) is an initiative created by the University of Oxford with over 80 partners across business, government, and the community. Its purpose is to strengthen Oxford’s position as a globally recognised innovation hub - one that connects research, industry and investment to deliver growth benefiting both the economy and society. Equinox brings together the people, ideas and organisations driving progress across the region to accelerate innovation, attract investment, and ensure opportunity is shared.

Oxford Innovation Society

Managed and facilitated by OUI, the Oxford Innovation Society (OIS) brings together researchers, founders, investors and industry partners to connect, collaborate and explore new opportunities within Oxford’s innovation ecosystem.

Through a curated programme of events and activities, members can build relationships, exchange insight and engage directly with Oxford University Innovation’s Licensing, Investment and Consulting teams.

Through ImpactU, we’re working with universities, founders and investors across the UK to build stronger pathways for mission-led university companies – connecting ideas with the expertise, investment and support they need to achieve impact.

Beyond Oxford: the global innovation community

Outside of the Oxfordshire innovation ecosystem, we’re part of a wider network of university innovation organisations working across technology transfer and knowledge exchange to help ideas move from research to impact.

Collaboration is central to this sector. We share knowledge, experience and best practice to strengthen how we collectively support researchers, connect with partners and translate ideas into innovation-led impact.

That spirit is core to our role within TenU, a global network of leading university innovation organisations, including the University of Cambridge, MIT, Stanford University, Imperial College London and UCL. Together, TenU members share expertise across the sector to inform policy and support governments and universities worldwide.

We also openly share our Theory of Change methodology, which maps how Oxford knowledge and research create impact for the economy, people and the planet – helping others across the sector articulate the role they play, and strengthen their own impact.
