OrganOx

OrganOx began as a research project exploring how to keep donor livers functioning outside the body. Supported by OUI for over 20 years, the technology developed into the OrganOx metra® system, now used to assess donor organs and improve transplant success. The company has grown into a global medtech business and was acquired by Terumo Corporation for $1.5bn in 2025.

Oxford Ionics

Oxford Ionics was founded in 2019 by Oxford physicists to commercialise their groundbreaking quantum computing research. The company quickly gained momentum, raising £30m in Series A funding to scale its record-breaking ion-trap quantum technology. In 2025, its rapid rise culminated in a $1.075bn acquisition by quantum computing leader IonQ.

Oxford Nanopore Technologies

Oxford Nanopore Technologies was built on nanopore research from Oxford’s Department of Chemistry and spun out by OUI in 2005. At a time when genome sequencing was attracting a lot of attention, Oxford Nanopore Technologies developed molecular-sensing technology using nanopores, with multiple applications including DNA sequencing, and helped to advance medical research and the development of new drugs and treatments.

YASA

Researchers from Oxford devised a small but powerful electric motor for the 2008 Morgan Lifecar. Driven by OUI’s expertise, Oxford YASA Motors was spun out in 2009 with £1.45m to develop electric motors for both general use and specialist areas like motor racing. Today, Yasa supplies world-leading sports car manufacturers with innovative powertrain solutions based around its axial flux electric motors from its state-of-the-art manufacturing hubs.

OXB

OXB, formerly Oxford Biomedica, began life in 1995 as a spinout from the University of Oxford. What started as a drug discovery company (focusing on neurological diseases and cancer) has grown into a world-leading contract development and manufacturing organisation, pioneering new standards in the manufacture of viral vectors and playing a vital role in the development of next-generation medicines.

Theolytics

Theolytics is an Oxford spinout developing cancer therapies that use engineered viruses to seek out and destroy tumour cells – all tested on tumour samples from real patients. The company has raised more than £40m in investment to date, supporting the development of its lead treatment for ovarian cancer and advancing it towards clinical trials.

Onfido

In 2012, Onfido was one of the first entrants into the OUI Incubator, using its support to launch AI-powered technology that could verify identities online. Now millions of people use this technology every week to access digital services. The company was acquired by Entrust Corp in 2024, delivering the University’s largest return from a student-led startup – an 80x return on early seed investment.

Mixergy

Mixergy develops smart hot-water systems that help homes use energy more efficiently and store surplus renewable power. In 2025, the Oxford spinout raised £12m in investment to scale its technology and expand partnerships that support the transition to low-carbon home heating. It also won the 2025 King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for its commitment to decarbonising homes and businesses.
