Oxford Cancer Immunotherapy - Quality of Life (OxCI-QoL)

The OxCI-QoL is a validated patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure designed to assess the quality of life in adults undergoing immunotherapy for cancer. Developed to capture physical, emotional, and treatment-related impacts, the OxCI-QoL ensures a holistic understanding of patient wellbeing throughout immuno-oncology care.

Background

Cancer treatments are increasingly centered around immunotherapy, which presents unique benefits and side effects that impact patient quality of life. The OxCI-QoL was developed to address the need for a targeted tool measuring the lived experience of cancer patients receiving immunotherapy, spanning oncological and haematological malignancies.

OxCI-QoL complements the Oxford Cancer Immunotherapy – Burden of Treatment (OxCI-BT), which focuses specifically on burden of treatment. Together, the measures provide insight into distinct but related aspects of the patient experience: quality of life and the burden associated with treatment.

The PRO

Respondents: Adult patients (primary), with clinician input in some contexts

Number of Items: 19

Assessment Domains:

  • Living a normal life
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Immuno-oncology (IO) side effects and symptoms

Recall Period: 4 weeks

Response scales: 5 item Likert scale.

Estimated Completion Time: ~3 minutes

Development

The OxCI-QoL followed a rigorous development process:

  • Initial Framework: Hypothesised conceptual framework developed from literature and clinical experience
  • Instrument Drafting: Adjusted conceptual framework informed a draft of the COA instrument
  • Validation: Confirmed conceptual framework and evaluated measurement properties through data collection, analysis, and interpretation
  • Language: Originally developed in UK English
Scoring system

Built upon a confirmed conceptual framework, defined scoring rule enables consistent interpretation across contexts.

Administration methods

The OxCI-QoL was initially developed to be used in clinical environments, research trials or outpatient follow-ups via paper and pen completion by patients; however clinicians may assist as needed.

OxCI-QoL is used in the My Melanoma study, migrating the PROM to an electronical delivery to use in the digital trial. Digital reproduction guidance is available for those wishing to migrate the conventional paper-pen version into a digital questionnaire platform.
