ImpactU and London Social Ventures join forces to build the UK’s social ventures ecosystem

A new collaboration creating a stronger national pathway for social ventures to grow and achieve impact.

University knowledge and research have enormous potential to address social and environmental challenges. But promising ideas don’t all follow the same path from university to impact.

Social entrepreneurs can face particular barriers. Universities don’t always have the specialist expertise or infrastructure to support them, while early-stage companies can struggle to access investment before they have demonstrated proof-of-concept or generated revenue. As a result, promising ideas can struggle to get started – and their potential impact can be lost. 

ImpactU and London Social Ventures (LSV) are joining forces to help change this.

Led by a national university consortium, the combined programme will operate under the ImpactU brand, with LSV becoming the first regional hub in a growing UK-wide network. Together, they will connect university founders with training, expertise, early-stage investment and opportunities to develop their companies.  

What is a social venture?

Social Ventures, also known as mission-led or impact-led companies, balance profitability with a clear commitment to positive social, environmental or cultural change.

Other businesses can also generate significant positive impact, but what distinguishes mission-led companies is the intentionality and long-term commitment to their mission that guides what they do. 

A connected route from idea to impact

ImpactU and LSV have been developing different parts of the support mission-led university companies need.

Developed by a partnership of universities led by Queen Mary and UCL, LSV has supported and strengthened the pipeline of social ventures emerging from London’s universities. It brings proven venture support programmes & funding, alongside strong networks across London’s impact economy.

Led by Oxford University Innovation and LSE, ImpactU provides a national platform connecting universities with learning, expertise and early-stage investment.

Together, they will create a more connected pathway, helping people explore mission-led entrepreneurship, develop promising ideas, build sustainable companies, access investment and ultimately scale their impact. 

Mission-led companies have enormous potential, yet the infrastructure around them is still developing. Through ImpactU, we’re bringing universities, expertise and investment together to change that. Joining forces with London Social Ventures is an important next step – moving from successful individual programmes towards a connected national innovation ecosystem in which mission-led university companies can start, grow and achieve impact at scale.

Universities will also have access to specialist training and shared resources, helping professional services and knowledge exchange teams develop the capability to support mission-led entrepreneurship.

The ambition goes beyond supporting individual companies. By combining national coordination with regional expertise, ImpactU is developing infrastructure that can enable more mission-led ideas to emerge from universities across the UK and achieve impact at scale. 

This is an exciting next step for the university social ventures ecosystem. Our pilot of London Social Ventures with UCL and a wide consortium of London universities made an exceptionally strong case for continued public investment in supporting academic and student led social ventures to move from early-stage idea to sustainable business. The exceptional and complementary work delivered by ImpactU gives us a unique opportunity to team up and develop a comprehensive, national programme. The potential for economic growth and sustainable impact is enormous and we want to seize it without delay.

Building on proven impact

Counterfactual economic analysis from Divine Ox, an Oxford start up, showed that both LSV and ImpactU can accelerate real economic activity, generating jobs and revenue beyond what the market alone would have produced.

ImpactU has invested £1 million in 25 companies and supported more than 700 learners through the ImpactU Hub. Its companies have created 17 jobs and attracted over £3.6m in further funding.

LSV has supported 94 companies from 15 London universities across four programmes and is projected to return more than 300% in tax revenue in 4 years on the original public investment. Its later-stage Catalyst programme has generated £520,000 in attributable revenue,16 additional jobs and could deliver more than 300% return in tax revenue over four years on the original public investment.

More than 60 universities are already engaged in the growing network. The collaboration provides the foundation for taking that support further – connecting national expertise and investment with regional networks and opportunities.  

What happens next?

ImpactU and LSV will test the new national-and-regional model through a UK-wide programme in autumn 2026, helping participants explore mission-led company creation and develop promising ideas into testable concepts.

The longer-term ambition is to:

  • establish a nationwide network of regional hubs  
  • expand early-stage investment for mission-led university companies  
  • strengthen universities’ ability to support mission-led founders  
  • connect companies with customers, expertise, procurement opportunities and capital

Together, these elements will help create a stronger UK innovation ecosystem in which more mission-led university ideas can find their route to impact.

Building the infrastructure for mission-led innovation

 

ImpactU is led by Oxford University Innovation (OUI), alongside the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Through ImpactU, OUI is applying almost 40 years of innovation expertise beyond Oxford – connecting universities, founders and investment to build the infrastructure mission-led companies need to succeed. Its investment model also draws on OUI’s experience developing the University Challenge Seed Fund, established 26 years ago.
