Oxford leads UK for spinout investment as Equinox sets ambition for next phase of growth
Oxford spinouts have attracted more equity investment than those of any other UK university over the past decade, with their lead becoming even stronger at later stages of growth, according to new research from Parkwalk with Beauhurst Insights.
Publication date: 23 October 2026
The ‘Equity Investment into Spinouts 2026’ report finds that University of Oxford spinouts secured £5.39 billion across 607 equity investment deals between January 2016 and June 2026, placing Oxford first among UK universities for both investment value and deal activity.
Oxford's lead is particularly strong among more mature companies. Its later-stage spinouts attracted £2.83 billion across 134 investment deals – almost twice the £1.42 billion raised by Cambridge's later-stage spinouts, and 52% more deals.
The findings provide further evidence of Oxford's ability to attract investment into companies emerging from its world-leading research. They also come as the newly published Equinox 2035 Strategy sets out ambitions to strengthen Oxfordshire's position as a globally competitive innovation hub.
From company creation to growth at scale
Oxford has been the UK's leading university for spinout creation for six consecutive years, according to the Royal Academy of Engineering's ‘Spotlight on Spinouts 2026’ report.
The Parkwalk with Beauhurst insights report add another dimension to that leadership: Oxford companies are attracting significant investment as they mature.
While Oxford recorded 12.6% more equity investment deals than Cambridge across all stages, that lead increased to 52.3% among later-stage companies.
These findings show that Oxford's strength goes well beyond creating new companies. We're seeing Oxford-born businesses attract substantial investment as they mature, reflecting the quality of the research behind them and the confidence investors have in their potential.
But the opportunity is bigger still. We need to keep strengthening the pipeline of new companies while making it easier for those with global ambitions to access the capital, expertise and connections they need to grow. That's where collaboration across a global investment community can make a real difference.
Building on Oxford's strengths through Equinox
The new Equinox 2035 Strategy sets out a shared ambition to build on Oxfordshire's established innovation strengths and create the conditions for more companies to start, scale and stay.
Its targets include the creation of 20 Oxfordshire unicorns by 2035 and attracting more than £1 billion annually in venture and growth investment, alongside investment from 10 UK pension funds and 10 leading US venture capital funds.
For investors, the strategy aims to make Oxfordshire's opportunities more visible and easier to access. Plans include establishing a regional Inward Investment Unit, improving companies' investment readiness and coordinating initiatives to address funding gaps, particularly at scale-up stage.
We are a founding signatory of Equinox, with our Chief Executive Officer, Mairi Gibbs, serving as co-lead of its Investors workstream.
The question now is how we ensure the benefits of that innovation are anchored here in the UK: that our companies can start, scale and stay; that our talent sees a future here; and that the prosperity created by innovation is felt far beyond our laboratories and campuses, in the communities that surround them.
Supporting the next phase of growth
The Parkwalk and Beauhurst report also highlights challenges facing the wider UK spinout sector.
UK spinouts raised £1.56 billion in the first half of 2026, the second-highest half-year total in the past decade. However, first-time equity investment fell by 68.3% compared with the same period in 2025.
International investors are also playing an increasingly important role in supporting company growth, participating in investment rounds accounting for 86.1% of UK spinout investment value in the first half of 2026.
Together, these findings underline the importance of supporting a strong pipeline of new companies while improving access to long-term growth capital.
Oxford's investment record provides a strong foundation. Through Equinox, we are working with the University and the wider investment community to build on that success, helping more companies attract investment, grow and deliver lasting benefits for the economy and society.
