Great ideas can change the world in different ways

Some university ideas are well suited to established pathways for creating and growing companies. Others have the potential to tackle significant social, environmental or cultural challenges, but need a different kind of support to realise their full potential.

Oxford University Innovation (OUI) is helping to build that pathway.

Through ImpactU, we’re working with universities, founders, investors and other organisations across the UK to develop the ecosystem mission-led companies need to start, grow and achieve impact at scale.

It’s part of our wider role as the University of Oxford’s innovation partner: developing new routes through which university knowledge and research can benefit the economy, people and planet.

Why mission-led companies matter

Mission-led business is moving into the mainstream.

Across the UK, a growing community of entrepreneurs is building companies that combine financial sustainability with a commitment to addressing societal and environmental challenges.

Universities can be an important source of these companies. Their knowledge and research span some of society’s most complex challenges – from health and education to sustainability, inequality and culture – and the people working within them can see opportunities for new approaches.

But not every idea follows the same innovation journey.

Some mission-led ideas can fall between established routes to impact. They may need early funding to test a new model. They may serve markets that conventional investors consider difficult or immature. Or they may need to demonstrate social impact alongside financial sustainability.

This creates a challenge – and an opportunity.

If we want the full breadth of university knowledge and research to achieve impact, we need an innovation ecosystem capable of supporting different kinds of ideas.

What is a mission-led company?

Some of our spinouts and startups are mission-led companies, balancing profitability with a clear commitment to positive social, environmental or cultural change.

Their purpose is built into their legal structures, ensuring the board makes decisions that stay true to the mission.

The more profit these companies make, the more they can reinvest in their work – whether partnering with charities, providing products for free, or running programmes for their target beneficiaries.

Profit-led businesses can also generate significant positive impact. What sets mission-led companies apart is the intentionality and long-term commitment to their mission that guides what they do

Developing a new route to impact

OUI has almost 40 years of experience helping transform Oxford knowledge and research into innovation-led impact. That experience has taught us something important: there is no single route from a great idea to meaningful change.

Our role is to help identify and develop the pathway that gives an idea the best opportunity to succeed.

For mission-led companies, that means looking beyond the support available to an individual Founder or company. It means developing the connections between universities, expertise, investment and entrepreneurial communities that allow promising ideas to emerge and grow.

This is why we helped develop ImpactU.

ImpactU brings universities together around a shared challenge: how can we enable more mission-led ideas originating in UK universities to become sustainable companies capable of achieving impact at scale?

It combines access to early-stage investment with learning, expertise and a community that supports founders as they develop their ideas. In doing so, ImpactU isn't simply supporting individual companies. It's helping build the infrastructure for a stronger UK mission-led innovation ecosystem.

Building ImpactU

ImpactU was established with £1.5 million of funding from Research England and is led by OUI and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

OUI brought its experience of company creation, investment and innovation ecosystem development to the initiative, working with universities and other organisations to create a model that could reach beyond Oxford.

Alongside investment, the ImpactU HUB provides learning, workshops, expertise and community – helping people explore mission-led entrepreneurship and giving Founders practical support as their companies develop.

‘ImpactU shows what becomes possible when universities combine their knowledge and ideas with innovation expertise, investment and a connected community. By working together, we can create new pathways for mission-led companies and help more ideas achieve impact at scale.’

From Oxford expertise to a UK-wide ecosystem

Some challenges are bigger than any one university. That’s why ImpactU is a UK-wide initiative, connecting universities, Founders and investors to build stronger pathways for mission-led ideas.

By sharing Oxford’s innovation expertise and learning from the wider community, we’re helping strengthen the environment in which these companies can succeed.

It’s an investment in the UK’s capacity to turn mission-led ideas into lasting change.

The opportunity ahead

Mission-led companies are becoming an increasingly important part of the UK economy, while universities face growing expectations to turn knowledge and research into economic and societal impact.

At OUI, we believe this requires an innovation ecosystem with different routes to impact. ImpactU is one of those routes, connecting universities, expertise and investment to help mission-led companies grow.

A better future needs great ideas – and pathways that enable them to make a difference.
