Patient Experiences in Digestive and Nutritional Health: Insights from Clinical Outcome Assessments

7th February 2025
Oxford University Innovation’s Clinical Outcomes team offers validated assessment tools that capture patient experiences in gastroenterology, nutrition, and dietetics. These insights help clinicians and researchers enhance patient-centered care, improve health outcomes, and shape better healthcare policies.
Understanding patients’ experiences with gastroenterological conditions is essential for advancing care in nutrition, dietetics, and gastroenterology. The Clinical Outcomes team at Oxford University Innovation (OUI) provides a portfolio of validated Clinical Outcome Assessments (COAs) designed to measure and improve health-related quality of life in these fields. These tools, outlined below, empower clinicians and researchers to gain deeper insights into patients’ perceptions of their health, the impact of their conditions, the quality of healthcare services, and the effectiveness of interventions.
- The Coeliac Disease Assessment Questionnaire (CDAQ): A 32-item patient survey that evaluates the health-related quality of life for individuals with coeliac disease. It examines critical challenges including stigma, dietary burden, symptoms, social impact, and disease-related concerns.
- The Nutrition and Dietetic Patient Outcomes Questionnaires (NDPOQ): Dual-version self-reporting surveys for adults and parents/carers of children, they provide insights into the quality of Nutrition & Dietetic services and the outcomes experienced by patients.
- COAs for related conditions: The portfolio includes assessment tools for conditions like diabetes, where gastrointestinal and metabolic factors significantly impact patient well-being. These assessments provide insights into how chronic conditions affect patients’ daily lives, enabling more targeted care. For more information about the full range of diabetes-specific COAs, please visit OUI’s Diabetes Scores – Oxford University Innovation.
By incorporating validated tools like these into practice, clinicians and researchers can bridge the gap between clinical care and the lived experience of patients; delivering care that truly reflects the needs of their patients, all while generating real-world evidence that drives meaningful change in healthcare delivery and policy.
If you have any questions related to these COAs or would like to find out more about how you can obtain a licence to use the tools, you can visit the assessment pages via their retrospective links above or contact the Clinical Outcomes team via healthoutcomes@innovation.ox.ac.uk.
