Background

Seeking Funding – Estimation of a preference-based Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-30) (single index measure of health) for use in women with endometriosis.

The Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-30) is a disease-specific Patient Reported Outcome (PRO) measure for women with endometriosis. It was developed to provide a measure of the impact of endometriosis upon health-related quality of life from the woman’s perspective. The original English version of the EHP-30 has been shown to be a reliable, valid (Jones et al 2001) and responsive (2004) instrument. Since then, it has undergone further psychometric testing (2006), has been officially translated into over 30 languages and has been adopted into over 60 studies.

While the EHP-30 has proven to be a useful instrument for demonstrating treatment benefits, it cannot be used in economic evaluation in its current form because it does not incorporate preference information. The aim of this study is to develop a preference-based measure from the EHP-30, thus enabling its use for undertaking cost utility analyses within the context of clinical trials.

Methods

We propose a four stage study over 12 months.

Stage i) To derive a health state classification from the EHP-30 that is amenable to valuation using a recognised preference elicitation technique.

Stage ii) To conduct a valuation survey asking members of the general population to value a sample of states defined by the classification.

Stage iii) To estimate a regression model for estimating the weights.

Stage iv) To apply the results to an existing data set.

Outcomes

This study will provide a preference-based algorithm for estimating health state values from completed EHP-30 questionnaires. The deliverables will include:

• A report of the study.

• A computer programme for calculating the algorithms.

• Manuscripts for submission to a journal reporting the preference weighted algorithm and other aspects of the methodology.

3. Dr David Churchman, Clinical Outcomes, Oxford University Innovation Limited (specialists in PRO management).

Costs

We anticipate this costing approximately £130,000.
