Based on technology developed by molecular biologist Dr Luke Alphey and colleagues at Oxford University's Department of Zoology, Oxitec was spun-out of Oxford University Innovation in 2002.
Oxitec Limited and a leading crop protection company have recently been awarded funding from the UK government-funded Technology Strategy Board to develop RIDL® technology in the tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta. The companies will collaborate to create a RIDL strain of Tuta.
Since its introduction to Spain from South America in 2006, this moth has spread rapidly across Europe and Northern Africa causing vast amounts of damage to tomato crops, both in the glass house and open field.
At the current rate of invasion it is expected to infest the whole of Europe in the next 2 years.
