Cella Energy Ltd, is developing a hydrogen storage material that is environmentally friendly and can potentially be used to provide hydrogen fuel for internal combustion engines. The technology is stable and safe, with hydrogen encapsulated in a hydride core by a polymer shell that controls the storage and release processes.

The team, based in the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, is now working on demonstrator projects as the next stage towards commercialisation. Intellectual property developed through collaboration of researchers from the Science and Technology Facilities Council, University College London and the University of Oxford’s Chemistry Department describes a process to create electrospun fibres, 30 times smaller than a human hair, which form a white tissue-like material that can be controlled to capture and release hydrogen.

With applications as widespread as an alternative car fuel and battery replacement technology for portable power, Cella Energy Ltd. has attracted interest from large established companies in the energy and transportation sectors.
