Oxford University Innovation, the University of Oxford’s technology commercialisation company is the highest university PCT applicant in Europe, and the 16th highest university applicant in world, the World Intellectual Property Organisation has announced.

Isis had 62 applications published in 2011, 16 more than in 2010. The University of California, with 277 applications and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with 179, took the top two places in the university patent application tables.

The PCT system facilitates the process of seeking patent protection in multiple countries. Despite difficult economic conditions, overall international patent filings under the PCT set a new record in 2011 with 181,900 applications – a growth of 10.7% on 2010 and the fastest growth since 2005.

“Patenting is a key part of the commercialisation support Isis provides to Oxford’s researchers” said Tom Hockaday, managing director of Oxford University Innovation. “These numbers reflect the strength of the research base here, and the ingenuity of our researchers. Our international reach in licensing these patents is also growing; Isis has recently opened offices in Hong Kong, Japan and Spain.
