A new health outcomes questionnaire for the measurement of health-related quality of life.

A new health outcomes questionnaire has been developed at the University of Oxford specifically for the measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) causes a slight but noticeable and measurable decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills. A person with MCI is at an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s or another dementia (according to studies carried out in memory clinics about three to five times the risk of someone without MCI).

The new Mild Cognitive Impairment (PRO) measure was developed and validated at Oxford by PRO development experts (Professor Crispin Jenkinson, Nuffield Department of Population Health) in collaboration with clinical experts Professor Gordon Wilcock and Drs Catherine Dean and Zuzana Walker. Professor Gordon Wilcock is OPTIMA1 Project Director and Professor of Clinical Geratology and has established a clinical dementia research programme in the John Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford) and also contributed to the National Dementia Strategy for England. He has been involved in Alzheimer’s disease research since the late 1970s, when he also established one of the first multidisciplinary memory clinics in the UK.

The MCQ is a self-report, 13-item PRO, simple assessment tool developed so it can be used to assess outcomes following intervention such as cognitive rehabilitation or potential pharmacological therapies for MCI.

The MCQ and other Oxford Health Outcomes questionnaires are available from Isis Outcomes.

Isis Outcomes is an activity within Technology Transfer at Oxford University Innovation Ltd, dedicated to the provision and support of the highest quality PROs for healthcare providers and the medical product industry.
