6D.ai is caught by Pokemon Go developer

6D.ai

1st April 2020

Niantic, the developer of smash mobile hit Pokemon Go, has acquired Oxford spinout 6D.ai as part of its ongoing focus on augmented reality.

6D.ai uses smartphone cameras to provide a more interactive engagement with augmented reality. Whereas most AR platforms cannot recognise objects, 6D’s platform can find objects and edges within the video it is provided which AR elements can then interact with.

Niantic plans to build on its success with Pokemon Go with new offerings aimed at both consumer and business applications.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
