Isis spin-out OXEMS will improve quality assurance, health and safety, and cost for the management of pipelines and other utilities.

Delegates at the 2011 Mapping the Underworld and Pipeline Industries Guild event have welcomed the first ever designed-for-purpose, fully integrated underground asset management solution, from OXEMS (Oxford Electromagnetic Solutions).

OXEMS was spun out by Oxford University Innovation, Oxford University’s technology transfer company in mid-2010 to produce solutions for the utilities sector.

The Oxford team, led by Professor David Edwards developed and patented a prototype passive tagging system. Now fully commercialised, the OXEMS solution is available, initially for water utilities.

John Divit, Leakage Best Practice Advisor at Severn Trent Water, said: “Potentially, this product could have an impact as significant as bar codes. It could possibly allow utilities to locate and identify assets in a fraction of the time currently taken, and with a degree of accuracy which is not currently possible. This could speed up field operations significantly, may reduce the time customers are without a water supply, increase productivity, and reduce operating costs.”

The OXEMS system will also reduce disruption to road users and the general public.
