The Awards recognise and reward individuals and small teams who have harnessed the potential of their excellent research.

Oxford University Innovation would like to congratulate Dr Luke Alphey on winning the BBSRC’s Fostering Innovation awards, 2014. Dr Alphey won both the social innovator category, and the overall award. These awards recognise his world-leading research firstly at Oxford University and then at spin-out Oxitec, in the field of genetic control of insect pests.

Dr Alphey’s research has developed into a new approach to combat the mosquitoes that spread dengue fever, the fastest growing mosquito -borne viral disease in the world.

Oxitec was spun out of the University of Oxford by Oxford University Innovation in 2002.
